Take a look at the photographer's work especially sessions that reflect subjects similar to those that YOU want photographed. Check to see if they have several consistently good shots in this area, not just one or two. Remember, a photographer may be qualified in more than one area such as newborns, families, or pets. Ask for portfolio samples if you don't see what you're looking for. 

Do you have something specific in mind? Do you want a custom-designed session? Discuss this in advance to be sure they are confident that they can deliver what you are looking for. 

For example, I created this award-winning image featuring a new Matilda Jane Clothing line for tweens called '435' by rearranging the numbers in the hopscotch drawing to spell the clothing line's name. I added some flowers similar to MJC logo, and had one of my favorite models skip and twirl her way through the game. Such a fun session. 

No two photographers are the same. Each one shoots with their own artistic eye. Each one edits with their own creative processing style. Consider whether you can envision their style hanging on the walls in your home or office?

My creative style is clean and simple keeping the focus on the subject with the thoughtful, and intentional use of props. Whether in studio or outside on location, my goal is to capture the subject in their truest sense.

A great way to learn about working with a specific photographer is through other people's experiences with them.

Check those online reviews. Ask your family and friends if they know of a good photographer. Did you see a great photo on display in someone's home, or on the front of someone's holiday card? Find out who took it. 

Does the photographer bring out the best, and most natural expressions? Do the subjects look at ease? Do families look like they are enjoying the experience? Is the photographer familiar with the location? If not, are they the type to spend the time to scout it out in advance? How long have they been in business? Do they keep hours that are convenient to your schedule? Are they licensed and insured?

Each photographer has their own work ethic. Do they give you a clear picture of what to expect? Can they supply what you want in the end, and do they acquire it from professional sources? Are they organized to ensure a timely delivery of your products? 

Have they explained their pricing upfront so that there aren’t any surprises along the way? If not, be sure to ask about all associated costs, and exactly what’s included in their fees, and what isn't.
